Here is how it works. You take a nice collection of photos that you would like to sell. They can range from business advertising to fashion to zoo animals. You then sign up with a stock photo company and in return, if someone buys your photo to use for their work, you get a percentage of each sale. Take photos that are unique to a certain topic and they can be worth a lot of money to the right buyer.

WHERE TO SELL YOUR PHOTOS
iStockPhoto- iStockPhoto is the top stock photo site around due to their massive amount of photos and registered members. It can however, be a bit of a pain to sell on iStockPhoto. But don't let that discourage you. The reason being is that most traffic viewing this site are the serious designers looking for photos to use for big name companies. If you get accepted to sell with iStockPhoto and are exclusive to them, you can earn 22-45% royalty for each photo downloaded.
ShutterStock- Popular to many freelance photographers because it is free to contribute. Just sign up for a free membership and earn $.025 all the way up to $28.00 per photo download. ShutterStock is great if your images are general in subject while being professional at the same time.
Fotolia- Fotolia has a large library of images available for professional and freelance designers. Just sign up for a free account and upload your photos with relevant tags. Fotolia breaks down your ability to earn in two categories. The first is for single photo downloads where you can earn anywhere between 20%-63% for each download. This is depending on what your Fotolia rank is and if you are exclusive to them. The second is for your photo sold via 'subscription download'. This will earn you 0.25 credits to .40 credits.
Shutterfly- Shutterfly does things a little differently. You pay an annual fee and in exchange they allow you to set up a gallery on their site to sell your photos. The advantage of this is that you pay a reasonable annual fee to set up a gallery. $99 will get you 5GB of hosting space and $199 gets you unlimited. The best part, you get to set your prices for your photos. That means you make what you want for each download. Shutterfly visitors can purchase prints from your gallery or can buy directly via digital download.
